"STRANGE NIGHT" A Poem By Adedeji Raphael — Pawners Paper

Strange night comes with strange omens Crawling on the face of a mourning glowless dark sky And the grievous movement of a lost wind Fluttering again

Strange Night

Strange night comes with strange omens
Crawling on the face of a mourning glowless dark sky
And the grievous movement of a lost wind
Fluttering against the eyelashes of a blind night
- The wolves howl in unison with a banished voice
That breaks the rowdy waves of savagery seas
& the vultures perch on the roofs of innocent abode
Mocking and imitating the high pitch voice of the nightingale
When its sweetness was stripped and shred into a naked screech of anguish.
- Windows shut, doors closed, the euphoric
State of street poisoned by the cold fangs of silence,
Night comes with empty stomach roaming around the street
With the faces of sons, daughters, mothers, fathers as mask
To replay the story once etched on the frozen face of yesterday,
- Strange night comes with pale faces of sons
Whose voices faded with the slashes of heavy blades on their flesh
& of daughters who cascaded their faces
To hide the dark imagery formed into their crowded vision
& of mothers who forgot the tingling pain of babies teeth
On the breast, now saggy, emptied of new milk
& of fathers who in scrawny bodies danced to the dirges
Recited by their frazzled tongues from a deserted land.
Strange night comes with fiery tears melting
Dark candles moulded from fragments of haunted memories
Shredded from skin to skin, to remind of who we were,
Of Dark skin bleached by the rough touches of misery,
Of amputated words with once huge feathered wings,
Of chants swirling to the beats of valour,
Of pains, of servitude, of unshed tears, of forced,
Heavy armours worn on emaciated bodies of those who sworn,
To tend a withering bud into a blossoming flower,
Of those who sacrificed their death at the glimpse of a sunny dawn,
To remind and question us worthless ingrate successors
All those for nothing?
